Alias Files

n Alias is a small pointer that leads to a File. The idea is simple: To stop you having to make large numbers of copies of large files that would eat up your disk space. The idea also means that things are kept looking neater.

he Alias works simply by holding some instructions that tell the computer how to get from your file to the file that the alias is meant to point to. When it reaches the file, it then tells the computer to load it, and will also tell the computer that you want to open documents if you dragged documents over the top of the alias and released.

he alias system is not perfect however, and they will sometime lose track of the files they are meant to point to. This is usually because you have moved the file into a different folder. The instructions in the alias are not altered so they become invalid. If you Get Info on the alias and click on the Find Original button, then this will sometimes correct the path. The easiest option however, is simply to chuck the alias in the bin and delete it, then to create a new one.

overing around are several files and extensions that try to rectify the problem but from my experience, none of them do a good job of it. Examples of these include Alias Dragger and Alias Manager, but there are so many that simply typing in Alias into a Search Engine will get you to some of them. Alternatively, clicking here will take you somewhere nearby where these things lurk, though not exactly.
